Hawai'i Artist Heather Brown Celebrates International Surfing Day with Her New Collaboration Surfboard Model with Two Crows Surfboards

Aloha!

Today, June 20, 2012 is International Surfing Day! What a great day to observe!!
Many of you know that on the North Shore of Oahu in Hawai'i we usually do not have much for waves this time of the year, but this June has blessed us with heaps of surf and great times!
Today, Chris and I went down to one of our favorite logging spots (great place to ride longboards) and scored a few hours of fun surf with very minimal crowds and the sun even greeted us to make for a perfect session.

I took out my new Sea Siren Surfboard model which is a collaboration project with me ( Heather Brown) and The guys at Two Crows Surfboards (Carl and Nick) also from here on the North Shore.
I have been working with Carl the shaper over the past year to pinpoint the perfect shape board and once we found the shape, Nick and I worked out the art. Nick is a successful artist not only in surfboard glassing, but also in totally unique fiberglass art that Chris and I have also added to our art collection.

The "Sea Siren" is an 8'11" all around longboard and it is available in a limited edition of only 100 (each one is signed and numbered under the glass)
The first 5 have sold and the next 5 will be available the end of July. The price of the first 25 is $2500 which includes a special one of a kind 50/50 fin as well as a daytripper board bag to keep it safe. After the first 25 the price will increase $250 for each 10 made, so get yours quick!
The fin a 9" custom shape by Island Fin Design (pictured below) is green on one side with the Heather Brown Sea Siren Logo and black on the other side with the Two Crows Logo. Each surfboard does come with one of these fins as mentioned, also, there are fins available to purchase separately, you can click on the image below to be taken directly to my website where you can see purchasing details.
You can also pick up a Heather Brown X Two Crows Sea Siren model in Honolulu at The Surf Garage and soon in Maryland at Malibu's Surf Shop. Ask your local shop to carry these great boards!

The Board is 100% hand Shaped here in Hawai'i and hand glassed with all of the artwork being done using tinted and colored resins (this is not a cheap painting on foam or a laminate) The colors are vibrant and beautiful, this is a lost art in the mass produced surfboard market. Both the top and bottom deck of the board have the art and special laminate that I created for the model and all of the lines match up perfectly.

Contest for Small Business Grant for Heather Brown Art

Aloha Everyone!

I just signed up for a chance to get a small business grant from Chase and Living Social.
It is such a great program that is looking to help small successful businesses continue to be more successful and sustainable!

As many might know, in the past few years we have worked really hard to make Heather Brown Art a more environmentally conscious company as well as a more sustainable business here on The North Shore of Oahu in Hawai'i. We have hired two North Shore residents in the past 18 months and continue to work hard donating art, time and money to great local organizations like The Kokua Foundation, The Surfrider Foundation, The Wyland Foundation and many smaller programs like The Hawai'i Surf Tea, Access Surf, local public schools on Oahu and even a great local soccer team going to the Championships in Colorado.

We are looking forward to receiving this grant money so that we can purchase some much needed new equipment and a new work space so we can continue to pursue more sustainable business practices and source out and use even more environmentally responsible local products in our work.

Heather Brown Surf Art New Limited Edition Giclee Releases Sring 2012

Aloha!

I hope that everyone had a great weekend! It was a nice one here on the North Shore, we even had some out of season swell up here!!

At this years Greenroom Festival in Yokohama Japan, I made a large installation work consisting of multiple smaller paintings that could all stand on their own or when put together, could be a piece consisting of 7 individual pieces making 1 scene of an idealistic Waikiki Beach and Surf Day.

Rainbow Birds is a piece that has been swirling around in my head for a while. I love to paint birds and have been featured in a few different publications for the birds that I create, but I usually just have them as singles. The Rainbow Birds seemed to fit perfectly with the piece I had also created a rainbow with skateboards that perched over this entire installation.
Rainbow Birds Original is sold, but I have just released the piece as a series of limited edition giclees and hand highlighted artist proofs.

"Fun in The Sun" to me exemplifies the Waikiki Beach summer experience, lots of sun, surf and the patchwork of seaside umbrellas lining the beaches.
Fun in The Sun Original is sold, but I have just released the piece as a series of limited edition giclees and hand highlighted artist proofs.

"Ohana Surf" depicts the perfect Hawaiian Surfing day, bringing the whole family (friends are family too!) to the beach for a day of relaxation and sliding on waves!
The "Ohana Surf" Original is sold, but I have just released the piece as a series of limited edition giclees and hand highlighted artist proofs.

"Daydream Surf" is just that, the perfect wave rolling to shore alone in all of it's majesty (a rare site to see a wave pass through the Waikiki waters unridden) with just the beautiful fragrance of the summers Plumeria's filling the air.
The "Daydream Surf" Original is sold, but I have just released the piece as a series of limited edition giclees and hand highlighted artist proofs.

"Enjoying the View" reminds me of my first few dates with my husband Chris where we would go and surf Pop's in Waikiki and relax on the seawall after the long walk through Waikiki before paddling out. As people who surf, we are always so lucky that watching our sport is as fun as participating.
"Enjoying The View" was just released as a series of limited edition giclees and hand highlighted artist proofs.

"Yellow Plumerias" is what summertime means to me here on The North Shore of Oahu and all around Hawai'i. This is the season where the trees get thick with their rubbery looking green leaves and beautifully fragrant flowers. While there are many beautiful colors of plumerias, I am always partial to the delicate yellows and their poignant fragrance.

Greenroom Festival 2012 with Heather Brown

Aloha!

This year, the finale of my Spring Tour in Japan was the 2012 Greenroom Festival in Yokohama Japan. I have participated in the Greenroom Festival now for the past 4 years and it is one of the events I look forward to each year and would never want to miss! The Greenroom Festival is a 2 day indoor/outdoor festival dedicated to the environment, the beach lifestyle, surfing, surf movies, music and art from around the world.

This year was especially great because the festival just keeps getting better and better each year and we got to see many old artist friends and meet some new ones as well as see some great live music including one of my favorite newer bands, The Drums!

This year I was also asked to create the original art for the girls tee shirt for the Greenroom Festival with Cher Shore from Japan! The original art for the design is now available for sale on my website, if you click on the image below, it will take you right there for purchase details.

This year, I wanted to create something a bit different, so I created a full scene that I titled "Let's Go Surf"
It is a full scene consisting of multiple pieces that depict an idealistic Waikiki Beach/Surf day complete with a rainbow band consisting of 7 different original skateboards! I was so stoked on how the whole piece came together and it also tied in with the debut of my new collaboration surfboard model that is now available as a limited edition of only 100 with Two Crows Surfboards also from the North Shore of Oahu in Hawai'i.

As always, The Greenroom Festival in 2012 did not disapoint and it was nothing but fun, we even got to sit backstage and watch The Drums, Donovan Frankenreiter and Slightly Stoopid to name a few.

After a great 2 weeks that flew by, we returned back to the North Shore to sunny beautiful weather (no waves unfortunately) but a couple of great days on the beach to unwind and relax a bit with the dogs!

Heather Brown Spring 2012 Japan Tour

Aloha!!

Wow, wow, wow! What a busy last 2 weeks, sorry I did not post any blogs, but I was only working off my IPhone the entire time.

First, I would like to thank everyone who came out to all my shows around Japan in the past 2 weeks! What a fun time and it was so great to meet so many new people and see old friends and fans alike!

Heather Brown packed with Art and Surfboards ready for a 2 week Japan Spring Tour 2012

On this tour we stopped at 3 locations that I have never been to before so it was really interesting to have new foods and see new areas of the country of Japan that I have never been before.

The first stop was in Kobe in West Japan.  I have been wanting to go for so long now and there are so many supporters of my art in the area, so it was really nice to go and see the area and meet tons of new people. Not to mention the great food and especially Kobe Beef!

From Kobe we took the bullet train (my first experience and it was so much fun, and SO Fast!) to Nagoya, Japan. We enjoyed an excellent local meal the first night and rushed off first thing the next morning to an TV interview I had on a show called Lucky! Brunch. It was a fun experience, although I was pretty nervous. After I was on, Mickey Mouse was! I got to hug Mickey!!

After my TV interview, we rushed to my show which was held at Club Quattro in the famous Parco store in Nagoya. It was an interesting location, as it usually is used for music events, but we needed the size to accomadate the people, and it turned out looking really cool.

From Nagoya, we headed up to Tokyo (another bullet train!) for a show at The Heather Brown Gallery with our good friends and Surfboard Collaborators from Two Crows Surfboards. I always love shows at my gallery in Daikanyama, because I get to see so many familiar faces, friends, fans and fellow artists, Plus, I LOVE the gallery space itself, it is so nice!

Before my show, I was interviewed on LOHAS morning radio show on JWave by Hiromi from Surfrider Foundation Japan. LOHAS is a show about caring for the ocean and the environment we live in, it was really an honor to be on such an important and popular show, Donovan Frankenreiter was on before me.

From JWave, we rushed to The Heather Brown Gallery and were greeted by fans and friends that had been waiting in line outside to see the new art and my split exhibit with the guys from Two Crows Surfboards.

We went out to a new restaurant with the gallery staff and Two Crows Crew after a great show in Shibuya Station in Tokyo (possibly the most crowded area in the world)
I created an original piece of art for the restaurant a few months ago and it just opened so we were stoked to go check it out and have some great Hawaiian Food. The restaurant is called Kailua Weekend. They even let me sign the piece!

The next morning we left for a flight to Okinawa, about a 2 hour flight from Tokyo. I had never been to Okinawa and was so excited to go! When we landed, you could immediately feel the humidity and Chris and I loved it, felt like home! We made our first stop at one of the girls from the gallery, Ton's, Uncles restaurant on the beach called Daisy's, Great food and view, a must stop in Okinawa.

The following day I had a solo show at Coffee Casa in Okinawa. The family that owns Coffee Casa is about the nicest family you will ever meet and they were so welcoming and helpful and their children were so sweet! I was so surprised that so many people came out to the show, I really had no idea that my art had reached down to Okinawa like it has. I think over 200 people ended up coming through, and everyone was so warm and full of Aloha. Our friends that moved down to Okinawa from Kamakura last year, Peace K and Han Chan came ad ended the show with great music and hula, we are so blessed to have such great people in our lives!

With so many shows in such a short period of time, you get really efficient packing and unpacking art!
The following day I was able to visit the USO at the Air Force base in Okinawa for a few hours to meet with soldiers and their families and sign autographs and take pictures. There are so many families from Hawaii stationed there and I was touched by how so many were collectors of my art and how it "reminded them of home" It was nice to be able to spend some time and show my deep appreciation for their loyal service and sacrifice.

While I met so many great people on and off base, one person that I met, Jeremy Landen, touched me so much that I am tearing up as I type still. Jeremy was medically retired after coming out of a coma that lasted months. His friends taped one of my prints, Barrel View, above his eyes so when he came out it would be the first thing that he saw. When he finally came through, his doctors told him he would never walk again, barely speak, etc, etc (too much negative). He told me that he kept my print with him at all times, he even told his wife that he would meet me someday (even she thought he was crazy) and every time he was having a rough day he would take time to look at my art and that would give him the positive energy he needed to try harder and stay positive. Well, 2 years later (he told me his original print has basically disintergrated from him taking it everywhere and constantly holding on to it) he is walking, we had a great conversation (he even told Chris and I he would take us surfing next visit) and he told me he was honored to meet me. I was totally floored to say the least, I have never been so honored to meet anyone in my life, and though I am a very positive person, Jeremy made me even more positive and happy and I thank him so much for his sacrifice, service and for taking the time to come see me,

Heather Brown and Jeremy Landen at the USO in Okinawa Japan

We had a great time in Okinawa, great great great food and even got to see some great old friends from Kamakura and some from Kyoto that were there to help us and get married! Omedeto to Kojun and Maya and thanks for your help!
We left Friday morning for a flight back to Tokyo and then off to the 2012 Greenroom Festival in Yokohama Japan. I will post later on the Greenroom Festival as this one is getting a bit long.

Big Mahalos (Arrigato!!!) to everyone who came out to my shows in Japan and especially to Jun, Mizuki, Ton, Ayano, Yuki and Yuka from The Heather Brown Gallery who made this all happen and worked so hard each day. I am blessed to have people like you all in my life and I am forever thankful!

Aloha for now!!

Odaiba Hawai'i Festival with Heather Brown

Aloha!

I had mentioned earlier that there was a lot going on, so here is another update that makes me feel really good!

A few months back I was contacted by the people that hold the largest Hawai'i Festival in the world in Odaiba Japan to create an original art piece for their posters and advertisements. I was extremely honored to say the least! We met at my gallery, The Heather Brown Gallery, in Daikanyama, Tokyo, Japan when I was out there for the anniversary show and we all hit it off and had a great connection so I agreed and we worked together on a great concept for the art. After the past very tumultuous year in Japan, the idea behind the festival this year was "Coming Together". We thought that a piece that showed the varying flowers, colors and textures of Hawai'i would signify this idea in a beautiful way.

Once I had finished the piece, I fell in love with it too because you can really see the meaning and feeling behind the piece so I released it as a new Limited Edition Giclee as well called "Flowers of Hawai'i"

The festival is running from April 28- May 6 in Odaiba Japan

I want to send out big Mahalo's to the coordinators of the event for picking me to be the ambassador for the art from Hawai'i!!

In addition to the festival art, since Toyota was one of the major sponsors of the event, I was asked if they could put my art on the New Prius that was just launched in Japan for a one off car that could be shown at the festival! Now I want one that looks like this!
