Aloha!

Chris Viverito and I created a special board for the 2016 Surfboards on Parade event in Huntington Beach, California. Surfboards on Parade is an event that wishes to eradicate skin cancer and in their inaugural year raised more than $100,000 and we are hoping to raise even more this year! Please check out Surfboards On Parade for more info on this great event.
ALSO!!! If you are unable to make the gala event in Huntington Beach, you still have a chance to bid on any of the 22 awesome boards available, but you need to hurry as bids are being accepted through October 6, 2016 at 9pm PST. This is a great chance to get a super rad art board for your home or office and support a great cause at the same time!

Here is the board that we created for the event. Chris (the captain surfs) shaped this board from 200+ year old reclaimed cedar that he saved from an old building that got taken down in Honolulu so they could make room for another ugly glass high rise. He shaped a "pre-contact" style Alaia surfboard that I then painted using acrylic paints acting more like pigment dyes so you can see the grain of the wood and feel the piece move.

Aloha and Happy Monday!

Well it's November and October sure did fly by (guess thats what happens when you are in multiple countries gone from home for a full month! ) November is always one of my favorite months too and I am looking forward to this great month ahead!!

October was great, we were on tour in Japan and Australia for the month with brief stops in Singapore. We had not been back to Australia for 2 years, so this trip was so nice to go back and reconnect with old friends and make tones of new ones (we love Australia so much!)

The Captain Surfs and I participated in a few events around Byron Bay when we were there for the week and it was so nice to see how welcoming everyone was to us, our art and everyone else participating in the events that surrounded the fun filled week. We got to get a few days of fun surf, lots of sun, fun hikes and even a great stop at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary !

The first event was a special art show called "Surface" that we were invited to take part in at the coolest little hotel/B&B I have ever seen called The Atlantic in Byron Bay. This was such a fun night getting to see lots of old friends and to meet some great new people! Donovan Frankenreiter and all the kids painted a huge mural and everyone had a great time!

The following weekend was the 4th Annual Byron Bay Surf Festival. We were lucky enough to be invited down to participate 2 years ago and then again the is year. It has grown and become one of the most fun weekends ever! This is the event that brings together so many talented and great people that live their lives the same way we do. Each year we meet so many fantastic people and get to share our art and theirs (music, boards, woodcraft, film, stories, workshops, etc)

 The last day of the festival is so fun! It is the best surf meet in the world! Fun categories, TONS of boards (finless, single fins, twinnies, logs, modern shortboards, paipo, hand planes, etc, etc!)

Some of you may know the history of Bird Party and this project others may not, so I will explain a little (sorry to bore you if you have already heard this 1-29 times!)

I have always loved watching birds, drawing birds, sculpting birds, painting birds and really living somewhat vicariously through them at times in my life. About a year or so ago, my husband (www.TheCaptainSurfs.com) and I were on another tour and during a long train ride we started talking about different collaboration projects we could work on as we had a few in the past. Both of us definitely wanting to "up our game" and produce something that was....well... much bigger and better than we had done in the past with a much longer timeline and more unique pieces. Chris has been a lifelong musician since receiving his first guitar for Christmas at the age of 6 with big expectations to be the next Angus Young (of AC/DC fame) He has played in bands across the USA and been a fan or recording his own music in little diy home studios through out the years. Right away, he pulled out his laptop and had me listen to some beats and bass rhythms that he had been working on and right there we both looked into each others eyes and said "Bird Party.....The Band!!!!" and the project was launched.

We did not have any printing or pressing done overseas (which would have been a huge price break) because we believe in supporting the people working hard here in our Country and putting out a sweat shop free/cruelty free product. Of course we are using recycled materials from recycled vinyl from the thousands of colored vinyl records put out each year (this is why the color we have is random!) Records are pressed in New York, we are using all recycled papers for our record labels and record envelopes, We are using recycled cardboard slip cases and boxes custom designed and manufactured in Rhode Island, and the special edition liner notes on accordion cards are also all printed on recycled paper in Kansas. The limited edition album also includes a free digital download of the album so you can listen wherever you may roam! Each vinyl record is hand etched with the album title and edition number.

Happy Weekend Everyone!

I hope that you have fun plans and are out in the world sharing your ALOHA! We are quite busy right now so we are back on the 7 day a week creation zone over here getting ready to be on the road for the month of October in Japan and Australia.
So many fun things have been going on and I wish I could tell you everything in 1 blog post, but I think you would be really really bored by the end of it! ha ha

Well The first new this week is that we just put some new wood block prints up on my website. I love these pieces so much because it is so fun to look back into my archives of originals that I have painted over the years and breathe some fresh air into them for a little while.

We reprinted a few of my favorites and printed 3 new pieces too!

"Kaua'i Surf"

"Kaua'i Surf" was inspired by this picture of The Captain Surfs surfing in Hanalei one spring day. I even found the old photo! You can;t see the waterfall in the photo, but they were all busting that day!!

 When we were living on Kaua'i we were lucky enough to share a great property with some great friends right on the river. We would canoe up to the river mouth a few times a day for a surf or body surf, a jog or just a nice walk and swim. We were lucky to experience this idilic lifestyle for a while and I painted the original for this piece right on the lanai one day. The original is one of the few that hangs in our private collection to always remind The Captain where his heart lies. We originally printed one of these for pour good friends that lived there with us, but we both loved it so much we printed another few for a limited release.

 The third new piece is called "Waiting" As funny as it sounds to most surfers, I love the time spent in the water just sitting on my board and waiting for waves (I love it so much that so many times perfect waves roll right underneath me!) This is such a great introspective time for me and it fills my head with imagery that I later usually end up putting to canvas.
