Aloha Friday Surf Art Skateboards from Heather Brown

Happy ALOHA Friday!
A few years back I was asked to do a show in Kailua on the east side of Oahu. It was late fall in 2012 and I had been painting and touring (away from home about 4-5 months that year) all while working on projects with Rip Curl, Kokua Foundation and The Surfrider Foundation. Needless to say I was starting to feel a bit burnt out by the end of the year. The show was in February, which is usually the month I try to "take off" and do some surf and snowboard traveling and more surfing at home, so I almost did not accept the offer.
At the same time my husband Chris who had been making skateboards since the early 90's was back making a lot of decks for our small side project, Hawai'i Skateboard Company. In early December of 2012 he had pressed some beautiful decks with bamboo cores and we were all so excited riding them in our bowl and share these new boards with friends and all night skate sessions.
Up to that point I had already painted original work on skateboards here and there but now with the boards being made right there on our property in Pupukea on the North Shore, I knew I had to make an original series on skate decks. I was so inspired and I would work 12-14 hours a day every day so I could fit this extra show into my schedule. I had so many ideas of what I wanted to paint on them that I think I ended up painting about 20 decks and drinking 3,482 pots of coffee! ha ha
The show was so positive and fun, it would be impossible for anyone with a heart to leave without at least a little smile on their face. That is when all of those extra hours I spent just washed away and pure happiness took over.

Happy to have showed art last night at The Wyland Gallery in Haleiwa on the beautiful North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii for the 11th Annual Surf Art Show! This was my 11th year in a row participating and it always feels like a fun homecoming holiday party with loads of great art from so many fun ocean inspired artists and the best fans and collectors in the world!
I have been so busy with touring and shows, that I only painted 3 new originals for the show, as seen below.

Well we got really lucky here in Hawaii and tropical storm Flossie didn't really cause much damage more than a normal storm system that we see regularly!! We spent most of the day battoning down the hatches at our home and studio on Monday in preparations, then we sat and decided to make new tees and hats!

I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer! We have had such a beautiful July here on the North Shore so far, summer is in full swing!

This past Saturday, I took part in The Hawaii Skateboard Company release party at the Greenroom Gallery in Waikiki.
The Hawaii Skateboard Company is a business that my husband Chris (The Captain) has been working on, designing, shaping and finishing beautiful cruiser skateboards as well as pressing and shaping modern 7 ply street,bowl, ramp boards. Chris has been making hand shaped solid oak cruiser skateboards for over 20 years now and has gained a loyal following of riders around the world. In the past year, he had decided to re-brand the company and Saturday was the first release of the new boards in the USA, he had released them in Japan at the Greenroom Festival in Yokohama in May and they all sold out within hours!

I am so luck to be able to work closely with him on so many projects and this one is one of my favorites for my love of skateboarding is so strong. I did a logo design

Here are a couple of photos of some of the boards at the exhibit. Not only do these boards look beautiful, but they are the smoothest ride out there and have been road tested for over 20 years! Chris grips the tops of the boards with sand from the beach at the famous Pipeline using a special mixture of environmentally safe water based urethanes too!
